KGA EARTH DAY CLEANUP

Hearty thanks to our Earth Day crew of diligent trash pickers. On Sunday, April 20th, a dozen bags of debris were collected from the shoulders and wooded areas along Heathcote, Ridge, and Mapleton Roads. There were the usual bottles, cans, food containers, styrofoam, pizza boxes, and plastic bags, but also bags of grass clippings, a bicycle wheel, a squashed volleyball, and perhaps the most unusual item found to date:

KINGSTON GREENWAYS ANNUAL MEETING/"KNOW THE BEAR FACTS"

Thursday, May 15, 7:30 PM

Kingston Fire House, 6 Heathcote Road, Kingston

Following a brief business meeting, Michelle Ruggiero will present "Know the Bear Facts." She is an Assistant Biologist with the NJ Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Fish and Wildlife, where she has worked full-time since 2004, having started her career within the Division of Watershed Management.

Black bears have now been confirmed in all 21 of New Jersey's counties. Consequently, residents are encouraged to become better educated about this important component of the state's natural heritage. The program offers the general public information about living with black bears in New Jersey, and covers the natural history and biology of bears in the Garden State and the results of past and current black bear research. It also includes practical information on coexisting with black bears, such as steps one should follow in order to ensure that bears do not become a nuisance animal in the neighborhood.

The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

FRIENDS OF THE MARSH BIRD SPRING BLOSSOMING WALK

MERCER COUNTY WILDLIFE CENTER PROGRAM

Saturday, April 12, 2 PM

The Mercer County Wildlife Center is a state and federally licensed facility that cares for injured, ill, and displaced native wildlife. The Center provides these animals with medical treatment and a temporary refuge before releasing them back into an appropriate wild habitat.

As human development continues along the east coast corridor, suitable habitat available to wildlife decreases. This leads to more human contact, resulting in an increased risk of injury to both animals and humans. A group of animals with permanent disabilities is sheltered and cared for at the Center. These animals travel to schools and community events throughout the year, acting as ambassadors for their wild counterparts. The KGA program featured four animals, which, for various reasons, are not releaseable back into the wild. The birds that accompanied MCWC volunteer Nancy Derrico had lessons for us about their species, their stories, and our interface with their world.

ABOUT KINGSTON GREENWAYS

Kingston Greenways Association aims to establish a permanent green belt around the village of
Kingston consisting of natural environments, recreational park land, agricultural and horticultural
land, wetlands, streams and ponds, and sites of historical interest. The Association further aims to preserve and create connections of green among and beyond these for walking, jogging, bicycling and horseback riding. The Association aims also to promote understanding of our local region through study and education, and to provide oversight and advocacy for open space in the Kingston area. We will work in partnership with other regional, state and national groups in pursuit of open space preservation and awareness.

KGA is looking for individuals who would like to serve as trustees. If you'd like to join us, or just want more information, please send us an email! New terms begin in May. tari@kingstongreenways.org

HOW YOU CAN HELP

** Become a member
** Become a trustee
** Join us for walks, talks, workshops, cleanups, trail building, and field trips
** Get on our mailing list
** Attend public meetings, and tell state and local officials you're concerned about overdevelopment and loss of open space
** Tree Survey! KGA has applied for a grant to study, survey and photograph trees at the newly acquired Princeton Nurseries property. To help with this we need a small volunteer team of photographers and data organizers to help with the survey. We are sure that this small team can make a big difference in the planning for the nursery lands development. If interested, click on the "Contact Us" link above.
